Sub-Source Groups let you organize the sub-sources your leads come from into simple groups, like Organic or Paid, so it's easier to keep track of where your leads are coming from. This article walks you through creating a group and assigning sub-sources to it.
Watch: How to create a Sub-Source Group
What are Sub-Source Groups?
As the How It Works tip on the page puts it:
"Create reporting groups of lead sources and categorize them into groups such as Organic, Paid, etc."
Each Sub-Source Group belongs to one Lead Type (for example, Auto Finance). Sub-sources are the sub-source values your lead providers post with each lead. Once a group is created, you assign those sub-sources to it from the group's Assignments section. The Assigned column on the list shows how many items each group contains.
Before you start
You'll need a LeadExec user account with access to the Inbound menu.
At least one Lead Type must exist in your account (you'll choose it when creating the group).
Have your group names ready (for example: Organic, Paid, Affiliate).
Step-by-step
Step 1: Open Sub-Source Groups
In the left menu, go to Inbound > Sub-Source Groups. The Sub Source Groups page opens. If you haven't created any groups yet, you'll see No Sub Source Groups.
Tip: click How It Works next to the page title for a quick summary of the feature.
Step 2: Click Create
In the toolbar at the top of the list, click Create.
Step 3: Choose a Lead Type, enter a Name, and click Save
The Sub Source Group dialog opens.
Lead Type: choose the lead type this group applies to (for example, Auto Finance).
Name: enter a clear name for the group (for example, Organic).
Click Save.
Note: The Lead Type can't be changed after the group is saved. To use a different Lead Type, create a new group.
Step 4: Assign sub-sources to the group
After you save, the dialog stays open in edit view. The Lead Type now displays as read-only, and a new Assignments section appears below the Name.
The Assignments list is filled in automatically from the sub-source values posted with your leads. When leads of this group's Lead Type arrive with a sub-source value, that value becomes available to assign here.
Select the sub-sources you want to include in this group from the Assignments section, then click Save.
If the section shows No items available for assignment, LeadExec hasn't received any leads of that Lead Type with a sub-source value yet.
Step 5: Check your group in the list
Click Close to return to the list. Your new group appears with its Name, Lead Type, and Assigned count (a new group starts at 0).
To make changes later, select the group's row and click Open. Use Delete to remove a group, Refresh to reload the list, and Search to find a group by name.
Related settings: campaign Category and Group
Campaigns have their own, separate grouping options. To find them, go to Inbound > Campaigns, select a campaign, click Open Campaign, then choose Advanced Options from the campaign panel's left menu. Under Advanced Campaign Options > Assignments you'll find:
Default User Assignment: "Automatically assign leads received from this Campaigns to this user."
Category: "All leads received by this Campaign will be assigned to this category."
Group: "Supply the source group this campaign is associated with."
These are campaign-level settings and are separate from Sub-Source Groups. Sub-Source Groups you create don't appear in the campaign's Group dropdown.
Tips
Keep names short and consistent. Names like Organic, Paid, and Affiliate make the list easy to scan.
Create one group per Lead Type. Each group is tied to a single Lead Type, so if you use the same grouping (e.g., Paid) for several lead types, create a group for each.
Watch the Assigned column. A group showing 0 doesn't have anything assigned to it yet.
Drag a column header to the bar above the list to group the list by that column (for example, by Lead Type).
FAQ
Can I change a group's Lead Type after saving it? No. Once a group is saved, the Lead Type is read-only. Create a new group with the correct Lead Type, then delete the old one if you don't need it.
Why does Assignments say "No items available for assignment"? Sub-sources come from the sub-source values posted with each lead. If no leads of that group's Lead Type have been received with a sub-source value yet, there's nothing to assign. Once those leads start arriving, their sub-source values will appear in the list.
Do Sub-Source Groups appear in LeadExec reports? Not at this time. Sub-Source Groups aren't currently available as a field or filter in LeadExec reports.
How do I rename a group? Select the group in the list, click Open, update the Name, and click Save.
How do I delete a group? Select the group in the list and click Delete.
Are Sub-Source Groups the same as the campaign "Group" setting? No. The Group option in a campaign's Advanced Campaign Options is a separate setting. Sub-Source Groups are managed only under Inbound > Sub-Source Groups.
