Getting Started - Testing Your Setup, Pt. 1: Manually Creating a Test Lead

Let's learn how to manually create a lead to test your entire setup from start to finish.

Overview

Okay, so you've done the work:

  • Created your Lead Type to ensure you capture the right information on every lead

  • Set up your Lead Source to track where each lead originates

  • Built your Campaign to filter, qualify, and route leads appropriately

  • Added your Client profile to keep their information organized

  • Configured Delivery Methods to send leads to the right platforms

  • Established Delivery Accounts to govern how and when leads are routed

So what's next?

Before going live, you'll want to test this entire workflow from start to finish. Catching any blockers now, while you're still in setup mode, saves headaches later. Let's explore a couple of ways to add a test lead into LeadExec and verify that everything works as expected.

You have two main options:

  1. Manually add a lead directly into LeadExec - ideal for testing delivery automation without worrying about the ingestion process.

  2. Use a tool like Postman to send a lead in through your Lead Source - perfect for testing the entire flow, including how leads enter the system.

We'll cover both approaches, starting with manual lead creation.

Manually Adding a Lead

The Add function in the Lead List screen lets you create a lead manually. This is useful when you need to input a lead directly without relying on automated integrations; great for testing a new client setup or a newly added Delivery Method.

Step 1: Navigate to Lead List

Go to the Lead List view from the left-hand menu. If you don't see it there, expand the Leads section, find Lead List, and you can pin it to your menu for easy access.

Step 2: Start a New Lead

In the upper toolbar, click the Add button.

Note: If you have multiple Lead Types, you can select the specific type you want to use for your test from the dropdown before clicking Add.

A pop-up window will open where you'll input the lead information.

Step 3: Fill in Lead Details

  • Complete all required fields (these are marked in the form).

  • Any fields you haven't made visible in the Lead Detail view won't appear here. If you're missing a field you need, you may need to adjust your display settings first.

Step 4: Choose Delivery Behavior

At the bottom of the pop-up, you'll see a toggle for Schedule for Delivery:

  • Toggle ON if you want the lead to be processed and delivered automatically according to your Campaign and Delivery Account rules.

  • Toggle OFF if you want to manually control the delivery for testing purposes.

Step 5: Save the Lead

Once all fields are filled, click Save. The lead is now stored in the system.

Working with Unscheduled Leads

If you didn't enable Schedule for Delivery, your test lead will be parked and waiting. You can find it in your All Leads list view. Select the lead, then right-click to open the options menu.

You'll see several helpful options for testing:

Send to Client

  • Opens a pop-up where you can select a specific Client, Delivery Account, and Order (if needed) to route this lead.

  • You can also override the Delivery Account's default lead price for this test.

Find Client

  • Triggers a system scan that shows you all eligible client accounts with matching criteria for this lead.

  • From the results, you can choose which client to send to using the Send button next to each option.

  • The View Scan Log button is particularly useful here; it shows a detailed log of how the system determined which clients were eligible. This is great when you're troubleshooting criteria or routing logic.

Run Automation

  • This tells the system to apply its full delivery automation logic to this lead.

  • It takes into account all top-down settings: System automation rules, Campaign settings, Delivery Account configuration, and Group Delivery logic.

  • This is the closest you can get to a production-state delivery process without actually going live.

Reviewing Delivery Results

Once your lead has been created and delivered (whether manually or through automation), you'll want to verify what happened.

Head back to the Lead List and look for these helpful columns. If some columns aren't visible, use the Choose Columns option to drag and drop the ones you need.

Key Columns to Watch:

  • Status (left-most column):

    • Green checkmark: The lead is valid based on Campaign criteria, field validation, quality settings, and required fields.

    • Red cross: The lead is invalid.

    • Blue question mark balloon: The lead is pending quality control review.

  • Invalid Reason: If your lead was marked invalid, this column tells you why. This is your first clue when something's broken.

  • Send Count: Shows how many times the lead was distributed through automation.

  • Send Information: Displays the name of the client this lead was sent to. If it went to multiple clients, you'll see the first one listed.

Diving Deeper: View Send Information

For a more detailed view:

  1. Select the lead and right-click to open the options menu.

  2. Choose View Send Information.

  3. A report will open showing you the complete delivery process for this lead.

From here:

  • Select the delivery attempt you want to review.

  • Click Request to see exactly what information was sent to your client's Delivery Method(s).

  • Click Response to see what came back from your client's system.

Example of a successful Ping/Post delivery:

Example of a failed Email delivery:

Why this matters: The response data is often the key to understanding why a delivery failed. Different delivery methods return different types of responses; a ping-post rejection will look very different from a failed email delivery.

Learning to read these responses helps you troubleshoot effectively.

Fix and Repeat

Use the insights from your test to identify and fix any underlying issues. Maybe a field mapping is wrong, or a criteria rule is too strict, or an endpoint URL has a typo.

Adjust your configuration and test again.

Next Steps: Testing Injection with Postman

Manual lead creation is great for testing delivery, but if you want to test the entire flow, including how leads enter the system through a Lead Source, you'll want to inject a lead using a tool like Postman.
